Publication: Local businesses in South Africa are driving a new era of sustainable growth in the circular economy

South Africa's transition towards a circular economy has gained momentum. With businesses, entrepreneurs and community organizations developing innovative solutions to reduce waste, extend the life of materials and create more resilient local economies. A lot of these businesses and innovations are still under the radar, while already making significant impact.
Recognizing the need to celebrate and amplify these success stories, TheRockGroup launched the Inner Circle Stories publication and podcast series. Rather than focusing solely on theory, the initiative showcases organizations that are actively implementing circular economy principles and demonstrating what circularity looks like in practice.
By highlighting real-world examples, the project aims to increase awareness of the opportunities presented by circular business models while creating a knowledge-sharing platform for businesses, policymakers, students, and sustainability professionals.
What South African circularity looks like in practice
Alongside the publication, the Inner Circle Stories Podcast extends these conversations through monthly episodes, providing listeners with deeper insights into each organization's journey, the challenges they have overcome, and the lessons they have learned along the way.
Together, the publication and podcast create an ongoing platform that:
- Raises awareness of South Africa's growing circular economy ecosystem.
- Shares practical examples of circular business models in action.
- Encourages collaboration between organizations working towards similar goals.
- Inspires businesses to adopt more circular practices.
- Demonstrates how circularity can generate environmental, social and economic value simultaneously.
Taking circularity further
Scaling the circular economy requires collaboration between businesses, entrepreneurs, investors, government and communities. The businesses featured in this edition demonstrate what is already possible, but their stories also highlight the partnerships, markets and investment needed to take circular solutions further.
